Heading off to university is an exciting time filled with new opportunities and experiences. However, for many students and their parents, it can also be a source of anxiety and stress. The thoughts of your child leaving home, making new friends, and adapting to a new environment can be overwhelming. If you are feeling anxious about your child going to university, know that you are not alone. Here are some tips to help you navigate this transition period:
1. Acknowledge Your Feelings
It's normal to feel anxious about such a significant life change. Acknowledge your feelings and understand that it's okay to be nervous. Talking to friends or family about your concerns, especially those who have sent children off to university already, can help you feel supported.
2. Be Prepared
One way to alleviate anxiety is to be as prepared as possible. Identify your main concerns and address them individually if possible. For instance if you are worried about whether your child can budget their money, try to spend some time showing them how to budget. Visit the university, the city and the accommodation your child will be living in. Knowing the environment they will be experiencing can help you feel more comfortable with the situation.
3. Practice Self-Care
Make sure to take care of yourself during this transition period. Get enough sleep, eat well, exercise, and engage in activities that help you relax. Practicing self-care can help reduce stress and anxiety levels so that you are more able to support your child with their worries.
4. Enjoy New Found Freedom
Don't forget that after years of focusing on raising your children you may now have more opportunities to pursue hobbies, develop your career, start a business, explore new interests or even book an amazing trip outside of school holidays!
